It will fit, just press the lower A-frame further down than what you are doing now. I used an anchor bolt to draw it down. It is difficult, but once done, no problem. The next answer might be correct if you are talking about actually changing the entire strut assembly yourself, i.e. take the spring off. Don't do that! However, if you are only going to replace the unit as an assembly then there is no problem. This Is Dangerous, You Need A Special Press To Change Struts.Buy Them Where They Also Change Them, Or Better Let An Alingment Take Care Of This For You. Rotate Tires & Get An Alignment While You Are There Also.

They pop on/off, the connection is a ball/socket like a shoulder joint. The strut has a metal spring clip that you can pry off with a flat screw driver if just pry between the strut and mount doesn't work to make removal of the old struts.
