You actually have two oil indicator lights in the 95 Chevy Cavilier, a Check Oil Light, which glows yellow to indicate a condition that while not serious, could become serous if ignored and the Oil Light that looks like a glowing tea pot, which glows red to indicate a serious condition needing immediate attention. That is the oil pressure lamp. The Check Oil light indicates low oil level. Usually it comes on when the oil level is down a quart or more. Check your oi level and if it is low, simply add oil to top it off and the lamp should go out The oil pressure light, on the other hand, is a more serious condition indicating low oil pressure. This comes on either when your oil level is extremely low, (in which case the check oil light is also illuminated), or a bad or failing oil pump
Check the oil level in the rear differential, drive shafts could also be bad.
NOTE: Check the transmission oil with the engine OFF the car on level ground.# Remove the oil filler plug, then check the level and condition of the oil. # The oil level must be up to the filler hole. If it is below the hole, add oil until it runs out, then reinstall the oil filler plug. # If the transmission oil is dirty, remove the drain plug and drain the oil. # Reinstall the drain plug with a new washer, and refill the transmission oil to the proper level. NOTE: The drain plug washer should be replaced at every oil change.

Check your antifreeze coolant level is it going down , is your oil milky ? does your oil smell like gas , do a compression test this will help to determine if you have bad rings ( gas getting into oil ) When did you get your oil changed last ( filter plugged ) When you say "high", do you mean when you first pull the dipstick out without wiping it? If so this is normal, as the oil is pumped through the motor it "looks" high, but it's not. The oil gets splashed onto the dipstick, making it appear that the oil level is higher. Check the oil when the motor has been off for awhile to get the true reading. When you first pull the dipstick out wipe it with a clean rag and reinsert it all the way in, pull it back out, this will be the true reading. Measure your oil level when parked on level ground.
Park the car on a level surface. Drain the oil, change the filter, and add 4.5 quarts of the correct weight oil. Start the engine and run for 1 minute. Shut down and wait 30 minutes. Check the oil level and add as necessary to reach the full mark. You now know the capacity.
The oil pump may be changed when the oil level light begins to glow. Buy the oil pump from the eBay motors and it will be replaced.
