With the engine cold, remove the cap on the Power Steering pump. Inside the cap is a dipstick with a marking for both the cold and hot fluid levels
check the fluid level in the power steering reservoir and make sure it's where it should be.

on my 2001 3.8 litre the power steering pump is at the back of the engine under the alternater.
To check the power steering fluid in a 2005 Chevy Impala, first, ensure the engine is off and the vehicle is parked on a level surface. Locate the power steering reservoir, which is typically near the front of the engine bay, and remove the cap. Check the fluid level against the markings on the reservoir; it should be between the "MIN" and "MAX" lines. If necessary, add the appropriate power steering fluid until it reaches the correct level.

To replace the power steering pump on a Chevy Impala, first, ensure the vehicle is parked on a level surface and the engine is off. Remove the serpentine belt by releasing the tensioner, then disconnect the power steering fluid hoses from the pump. Unbolt the pump from its bracket, install the new pump, and reconnect the hoses. Finally, refill the power steering fluid, reattach the serpentine belt, and start the engine to check for leaks and proper operation.
