Engine must be at normal operating temperature - like just having been driven from 5 to 10 miles. Leave engine idling in Park with the break set and the wheels blocked. Pull the transmission dipstick, wipe clean with lint free rag, reinsert until it stops, pull out again and check the level. Should be within the hatch marks.
If adding more fluid, be certain NOT to overfill ... too much tranny fluid is just as bad as not having enough.
Do not check this fluid level on a cold engine ... you will get a false reading that could indicate the tranny is full, when it actuality it is not full enough after the engine has warmed up.
Just for your Information, the Ford Explorer 2004 Do not have a dip stick, it has to be inspected by a certified mechanic or respective cerfied auto repair shop... What you are state here just apply to those cars that indeed has a dip stick.
