You hear noises coming from the alternator. The dash light for charging stays on. If not equipped with light might be a guage, in which case you see it not charging.
Go to autozone & buy a $10 guage, Open the radiator when cold, Fill guage up with coolant & just read the level on the guage.
One of your guages is indicating tha you have a problem. Either your gas guage is low and you nee dto put some gas in, or your engine temp guage is reading high, your alternator guage is low, or your oil pressure is reading low.
When my jeep cherokee alternator went bad, the check engine light came on and I didnt have a clue what was going on until my volt guage was reading in the red zone. When I replaced my alternator, the light went off. So in my opinion i wouldnt consider the check engine light as a alternator light.
what should the volt meter guage read in my '93 Jeep Wrangler 13.5 to 14.2?
Alternator, every post i have ever read all points to the alternator
Go down to an auto part store and buy a cheap vacuum guage. Hook it up as directed and read the results. There are instructions that come with the guage that tell you how to interpret the results.
A caster camber guage is one of the easier guages you can read. It is all digital and it can read 0.1 of a degree out of a 20 degree area.
If the alternator is not charging the battery, then it will eventually go dead If the voltage regulator (in the alternator) is defective it will eventually kill the battery Check the alternator with a voltmeter A fully charged battery (without engine running) should read approx. 12.8 volts With engine running should read 13.8-14.2 volts
whats better 16 guage or 20 guage

Connect a voltmeter to the alternator and start the engine. An automotive alternator should read aprox 14.5 Volts when it's running and the battery is fully charged.
