everyone should have a manual for their vehicle, and a professional shop manual should be available at the library in the reference section--you can make copies of the necessary information...good luck :) It sounds way to easy to be true, but you just need to pull straight up, it does not twist off. Took me over an hour and a torn up shifter knob to figure that one out.
The shifter knob on a 1995 Chevy Cavalier is thread on. To remove it just spin the knob counter clockwise until it comes off.

If its a manual. All you have to do is pull it straight off (gotta pull really hard). But when you do, make sure you don't smack yourself in the face or neck. Been there, done that.

The plastic piece around the bottom of the shifting skirt pops off, turn knob counter clock wise to loosen and remove. Re-install clock wise.
Try twisting it and then get a manual for it. Try Chiltons or Haynes.
