you can't change it... you have to bring it to the dealer to get recharged.
The above is wrong.
One of two systems exist in current M3s. If the car has the Comfort Access option, the battery needs changing when it dies. In cars w/o CA, the "key" fob needs to be inserted into the ignition and trickle charges a different style battery. If if no longer holds a charge, change it out as well.
Cut open the remote with xacto knife , unsolder and replace the battery.
I was informed by a BMW dealer there isn't a battery to replace and you have to order a new remote and then have it programmed by the dealer.
small flat head screw driver pops off the back cover and there is a nickel size battery that needs to be replaced
To reinitialize a keyless remote battery on a BMW X5, first, replace the old battery with a new one, ensuring the positive side faces the correct direction. After replacing the battery, sit in the vehicle with the new key, close all doors, and press the start/stop button without pressing the brake pedal. This should reinitialize the key. If it doesn't work, you may need to consult the owner's manual or a BMW dealer for further assistance.
There is no battery inside the key to replace. The key actually charges through your ignition. If its not functioning you will just have to order a programmed key from the dealership.

1) How do you replace the battery on a 2004 BMW X5? 2) Do I have to program the battery or Register ?
yes
no
No, as long as the new battery is the same as the previous battery and meets the required specs of the car.
Take the remote to any DMW dealer. They have to match the VIN mumber to the remote code. There may be a small fee involved.
use a hammer..:)
