Make sure you use an original key. A copy can move the tumblers, but not make connection. If you have the original key, have the Chevy dealer cut a new key from code and try this. It is cheap and has worked for me. Dr. K

Remove the retaining ring from the top of your 1997 Chevrolet 1500 ignition cylinder. Slide the ignition cylinder out and remove the wiring harness.
If you take the vin number and proof of ownership you can go to a Chevrolet dealer and they can cut you a new key. I kinda think the OP is asking how to remove the Ignition Switch. You need the key to remove the switch without drilling and making a mess of the housing.
Chevy did not use a INERTIA switch on there trucks are vans.
