Forgive me for being blunt, but if you own a truck and don't know this, then you really have no business owning a truck.
Pay attention, because this is also how you check your Transmission Fluid level.
The only transmission you can get in a Volvo with a Cummins ISX is an Eaton-Fuller transmission - doesn't matter if it's a manual or a SmartShift - they both use the same gearbox.
Get under the truck. As low as the fairings on these sit, you might have to take the side skirts off to do this. On the left hand side of the transmission, there's a plug in which you insert the head of a 1/2" ratchet or breaker bar... remove that, then stick your finger in the hole. If you see fluid coming out of the hole immediately or you feel it at the bottom of that hole, you have enough transmission fluid (which, for an Eaton Fuller transmission for that year, it should be 50W synthetic). If not, you add it until you reach the bottom of the fill hole.
Caterpillar C series, Cummins IS series, or Volvo VED series.
You'd be in the 18,000 lb. range.
Need to know what engine you have. While Volvo engines were pretty much exclusive for the market outside of North America, in 1999, Volvo trucks could be had with a Volvo, Detroit Diesel, Cummins, or Caterpillar engine in the North American market.
38 to 44, depending on what the engine is. Depending on model year, Volvo trucks in the North American market have been available with Volvo, Caterpillar, Detroit Diesel, and Cummins engines in a variety of displacements.
The classy Volvo S40 has a standard 5-cylinder, 2.5-liter turbo charged engine. It also has Geartronic transmission.
It is yellow in color and hidden under the hoses on top of the transmission close to where it joins to the engine.
No. Cummins engines are an option on Volvo Class 7/8 trucks sold in North America only. Their heavy equipment does not offer them.
Yes it does. The proper way to check automatic transmission fluid is to check it while engine is at idle.
If your Volvo is an automatic transmission try changing the fuel filter.
Volvo semis are available with the I-shift (which I have no personal experience with, but it tends to get good reviews) only with the Volvo D13 or D16 engine. It is possible to get the Eaton Autoshift and Cummins combination, as well. Not sure if the Allison TC10 is available for these... I'm a bit doubtful of it.
Left side of the engine compartment, usually mounted to the engine itself. Specific location depends on the engine.
The crank or speed position sensor on a Volvo S60 is on the engine where the engine attaches to the transmission. It is in the 12 'o clock position and is normally blocked by the bootom radiator pipe which goes over the transmission. Vinesh vinvyt@gmail.com
