On a 1996 Chevrolet Cavalier, the brake line that goes to the rear brakes typically runs from the master cylinder through the proportioning valve and then splits into two lines that connect to each rear brake. The line is usually color-coded, with the rear brake lines often being a darker color compared to the front lines. It's important to consult the vehicle's service manual for detailed diagrams and specifications to ensure proper identification and routing.
hydraulic brake booster (power brakes)
More than likely, there is air in the brake line or a leak in the line. Go to a mechanic and have the brakes "bled". He'll know what you are talking about. It's fairly inexpensive to do. Bad brakes, bad master cylinder, broken brake line, low brake fluid.
Probable causes: Low or no fluid in reservoir; Worn brake pads/shoes; Air in brake lines; Leaking brake line.
Rear brake lines leave Master cylinder as one and are junctioned at the rear of the vehicle
In a typical brake system, the brake lines from the distribution block are usually designated for different axles. The line leading to the front brakes typically goes to the front left and front right calipers or wheel cylinders, while the line leading to the rear brakes connects to the rear left and rear right. Depending on the vehicle, there may also be a separate line for the parking brake. Always refer to the manufacturer's service manual for specific routing and connections.
YES!
depends where the leak is. In the brake line or at the pump? electric or mech brakes? if its in the line you should be able to replace the line section
best answer is take it to a brake shop it's not something that should put your life on the line for. but if you have to do it you will need a Chevy brake tool or an Allen wrench to remove the calipers then its simple to switch out pads. drums again I recomend a shop.
USUALLY the fatter line is for the front disk brakes. I am assuming your vehicle is disk / drum combination. To really confirm just trace the lines and see where they go. Trace the easiest line(s) first. You wont have to trace the last line as its the last wheel you didnt trace it to.
Possible brake line leak
replace the brake line and then bleed the brakes
You can cutoff the rear brake line. You will no longer have rear brakes and the fluid will leak out. It is not recommended that can't off the rear brake line, without replacing it.
