The speedometer cable connection is on the transmission tail shaft housing, drivers side. They went electric (no cable) in 1988 in the trucks.

Length of cable does not matter, as long as the connection to both instrument cluster and transmission are correct.
To change the speedometer cable on a 1988 Suzuki Samurai, first, disconnect the negative battery terminal for safety. Remove the speedometer cable from the back of the speedometer by unscrewing the retaining nut, then trace the cable back to the transmission and disconnect it there as well. Install the new cable by reversing the removal process, ensuring a secure connection at both the speedometer and transmission ends. Finally, reconnect the battery and test the speedometer to ensure it functions correctly.

The speedometer cable connects to the transmission speed sensor with a swivel nut. Simply turn the swivel nut to the right to connect the speedometer cable.
Depending on the vehicle type it colud be either a broken gear in the transmission, a broken cable or if the vehicle has an eletrical speddometer circiut it could have a bad connection.
