There is no such thing as Mercon VI; Dextron VI is a GM product.
Mercon/Dexron or Mercon VI.
No you need to use Dexron VI
Yes, Dexron VI can replace both Dexron III and Mercon V fluids, as it is designed to be backward compatible with these older formulations. Dexron VI offers improved performance and stability, making it suitable for use in vehicles that originally required Dexron III or Mercon V. However, it's important to check your vehicle's owner's manual or consult with a professional to ensure compatibility.
MERCON V is a transmission fluid for Fords and DEXRON-VI is a fluid made for GMs. Mercon and Dexron are NOT, nor have they ever been, the same thing. People got the idea that they were because traditional ATF meets the specs of both. It doesn't mean that they have the same specs. Mercon V and Dexron VI are non-interchangeable. Always read the label of any ATF you plan to use. GM, Ford and Chrysler all use different fluids so make sure that what you choose is correct!
Dexron-III/Mercon (D/M) does NOT meet the Mercon V (M-V) or Dexron-VI (D-VI) rating and should NEVER be used in a transmission that requires M-V or D-VI. However, M-V and D-VI both exceed the D/M spec and can be used in a transmission that calls for D/M transmission fluid. Despite this, there is really no point in using M-V or D-VI in a transmission designed to use D/M because those transmissions do not get any added benefit from them despite M-V and D-VI being roughly double to triple the price of conventional D/M.
