I use a large C- clamp and have had good results doing so.
Lift the car on a jack, remove the tire, remove the brake shoe/caliper and remove the old brake pad. Put in the new brake pad, replace the brake shoe/caliper, replace the tire and lower the car to the ground.
You need to remove the front tires to change the front brake pads on a 1993 Aerostar. So the new pads fit, you need to squeeze the caliper back, and then tap out the slide rails. Remove the old pads and replace with new ones and reassemble.
