When I start my Ford Windstar there is a bad squealing noise under the hood - what is causing this?
First, turn off your engine and check your serpentine belt to see if it is loose. If it has any give to it at all get a flashlight and check for any leaks around the water pump. If there isn't any leaks, try to push the fan up. If you can raise it up and down then your water pump is about to quit and leave you on the side of the road. If it wont raise up and down, check all of your pulleys and check for wear. They may be going bad. Good luck.
It may also be (which has happened to my boyfriend's mothers' windstar), the coil pack. It was in fact recalled, but there was a crack in her coil pack and it made that exact same noise and problem.

There is a wear indicator on the inside pads (closest to engine) that will rub on the rotor and make a squealing noise to warn you that the pads are getting thin.
