  1. 1 depends on where you position the distributor and rotor when you install it into the engine. when the engine is at TDC (0 degrees timing), then the rotor will be pointing to #1. the firing order of a typical Chevy dist. is 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2, in a clockwise direction. and the engines are numbered with the even nunmbers on the drivers side (2-8) and odd cylinders on the pass. side (1-7). it can vary between many poles on the dist. just remove the cap when its at TDC. to find #1.

NEW ANSWER: Your right on everything but the even and odd numbers.

The driverside head, front to back is 1-3-5-7

The other head front to back is 2-4-6-8

ANOTHER NEW ANSWER.You are both right,as these cars were made in left&right hand drive. There are many opinions as to what side, but,my friends it is simple. If you stand at the front,1,3,5,7 will be on the right side & 2,4,6,8 will be on the left.Good answer no. 1.

Chevy 350 where is 1 on the distributer if it is not marked?

It's not marked because #1 can be just about anywhere. When the engine comes from the factory, it's always the same, but if the distributor has been removed, #1 will be whereever the rotor is pointing when #1 piston is at TDC at the top of the compression cycle.
