That depends on the vehicle. Some use negative ground and some use positive ground.
Most modern cars (after 1970 or so) use negative ground electrical systems, but it's best to check the manual for the particular model of car your are working on. Typically, positive ground systems will be found in British cars such as Triumph and some really old American cars.
You should connect and disconnect the negative post first. This way, if your tool touches ground when you work on the positive post, you don't short circuit the battery.
pos (red ) should got straight to the battery or fuse box .ground should be conected to the frame of car or metal ,never the battery for the ground side
So any spilt fluid will not connect the terminals.
the motor should have two leads, usually a black and a white. connect the white to the fusebox and the black to a ground.
The battery should be under the back seat, remember to always connect the ground (black or -) to a peice of bare metal that is grounded to your car like the frame, if you don't you risk blowing up your car because of a hydrogen gas released from the battery, remove the Black - ground first to keep from making a spark and connect the ground last.
If your connecting a stereo, it's always best to ground directly to the negative side of the battery: however you can connect to a ground under the dash also. Some autos have a ground block at the fuse panel that can also be used but you will need a spade connector. your cars body is the ground.connect the stereo ground to a metal part of the car, leave the battery connected to a ground, engine should also be connected to a ground
Connect the negative cable first.
Try to follow the + battery cable (if - ground) should connect to solenoid either at top of starter or at fender well
When jump-starting a car battery, you should connect the positive terminal first.
1. connect red booster cable to weak battery POSITIVE post. 2. connect red cable to POSITIVE post on booster battery. 3.connect black cable to booster battery NEGATIVE post. 4.make final connection on engine block of stalled vehicle away from the battery. STAND BACK,start vehicle and remove cables in reverse order of connection by disconnecting engine block connection first.
Batteries vent Hydrogen gas. You should always connect the positive battery cable first to avoid a spark at the battery that could cause the Hydrogen to explode. The negative cable should never be connected to the battery negative post. It should be connected to another ground area on the engine.
1 ground the field to the gen. case. Marked "F" 2 with a 12v battery connect the ground the the gen. case 3 jump from pos. side of battery to the "A" post. Gen. should run like a motor.
