all motors are different, need to know year make, model and motor to tell.
cam slots need to be lined up.then crank pully key way way on top cener
Turn crank till number one cylinder is at top dead center on compression stroke. Both intake and exhaust valves will be closed. Turn cam till key way on cam sprocket is at 12 oclock position as well the crank shaft key way should also be at 12 o'clock position. Install crank shaft timing sprocket and cam sprocket with timing marks facing outward. The cam mark should be at about the 3 o'clock position and the crank mark will be about the 5 o'clock position. Look at the timing chain and find the two links that are a different color install chain so as to match these two links to timing marks on sprockets. Install guides and tensioner .
align the cams to the E & I marks on cam. You will see notches right beside them. Align the crank with key way up.
There is a o or a < on the cam pulley that lines up with a mark on the head. The crank shaft is brought to the 0 degree mark on the timing cover. Then you put the belt on. You could do it the hard way and bring cylnder 1 to TDC and then rotate the cam so the valves for that cylinder are closed and then put the belt on.
First put the #1 piston all the way up in the cyl.Make sure your crank shaft timing mark is lined up.There's another timing mark on the left side as you look at the crank shaft on the other gear(intermeteate gear). It too must be lined up. Put your cam gears timing marks together with all the valves closed on #1 cyl.
Crank gear dot should point stright up / 12o clock with #1 pistion at TDC.all the way up at the top of #1 cylinder. The cam gear dot should point stright down At 6o clock. That will make both dots stright over top of each other. Then the crank and cam will be in time.
NO... The crank gear is at 12oclock with #1 piston at TDC Top dead center means The piston is all the way up in the cylinder on the compression stroke. The cam gear dot should be at 6oclock in a stright line over top of the crank gear dot. STRIGHT OVER TOP OF EACH OTHER.
The crank gear dot should be at 12 o'clock stright up when #1 pistion is all the way to the top of the cylinder. The cam gear dot should be at 6 o'clock stright over top of the crank gear dot. Then put it back together.
With #1 piston at top dead center ( TDC ) on compression stroke. All the way to the top of cylinder. The cam and crank gear dots line stright up over top of each other. Crank gear is at 12 oclock The cam gear is at 6oclock That is the dots.
there should be a dot or line cut in each gear. the cam gear mark should be at the six o'clock position (all the way down) and the crank mark at the 12 o'clock(all the way up). line them up and you should have it made. spin the crank just to be sure the marks mesh correctly
For the crank shaft, there is a mark on the oil pump gear which should be straight up, same as the key way if you want to go by that. On the cam the pulley has a mark that should be pointing straight up toward the "V" in the cover behind the pulley. Hope this helps.
The crank shaft timing gear and the camshaft timing gears have marks on them. These marks are lined up so the crank gear is on top and the cam gear is on the bottom. when a straight edge when placed through the center line of the crankshaft and camshaft and lined up with the marks on the gears, the timing is correct. this is the procedure that I found in a old maintenance book for the GMC 305 V6 engine. I found that when you line up the timing marks this way that you are actually 180 degrees out ( number one is on the exhaust stroke) so your distributor will be pointing at cylinder #4. roll the engine around 180 degrees from this point( if looking at the timing chain the cam mark will be on top and the crank mark will be on top and they will both line up with a straight edge through the center-line of both shafts) and make sure that the distributor is actually pointing at number one. I do not know why the book does not have you line up the timing marks so you are on top dead center compression but it is easier to line them up the way the book says.
