Its cold, idling, and old.3b7From my understanding with my own 89 Honda civic LX sedan, is that there is a thermometer that sets idle speed at low and high temperatures, with age, ours have degraded, and the low temp. has been borked. It doesn't hurt your car any, I've checked with a few sources, it just means while your engine is warming up in winter, your car will do that little rev thing every few seconds while idling.

There are a couple possibilities; if the cooling fan is not turning on, the engine will heat up when idling. The cooling fan runs on a thermostat switch that senses coolant temperature. The switch can fail, as can the motor or the relay. You may need to go through a little diagnostic procedure to figure out what's causing your problem. To see if the fan works, try turning on the air conditioner. When the AC is on, the fan is SUPPOSED to run to pull air across the condenser. if the cooling fan IS turning on, but the engine heats up anyway, it may be a problem with the water pump. After a water pump has been in operation for a while, the vanes will wear and/or corrode making the water pump less effective. At some point it stops functioning at low speed.

You are not giving enough information to get a reasonable answer. It's like asking why it won't start. Any, and I mean any, detail would help. Are we talking about the engine cooling system? What are the symptoms that bring you to the conclusion it is overheating? Have you checked the coolant level? What year and size engine? Does it overheat only when stressing the engine, like climbing hills? Does it overheat only in traffic and okay on the highway? Does it overheat when the car is idling? Has the head gasket ever been replaced?

I presume the engine is running when the car is parked if the temperature guage does not move to the normal position when the car is moving at road speed but goes up when the car is stopped and the engine idling, then more than likely the thermostat is bad and needs to be replaced. If you se that the temperature guage is in the normal position anafter the car has been running a while and the temperature guage then goes down when the car is moving at road speed, then this confirms that the thermosta is bad.

The engine hourmeter on the Silverado/Sierra pickups will give the total run time of the engine including idling time. There is no direct correlation to the milage showing on the odometer. The comparisons you can make is if the hours are extremely high and the milage is low then you can assume that the engine has been idling alot. Alternately, if the hours are low and the milage is high then you can assume that the vehicle has a lot of highway miles on it.
The radiator fan does not come on when the engine temp goes above 210 degrees The cooling temp sensor cooling temp switch and one fan relay has been replaced. The fans do activate when the ac is on.?

Could be the O2 sensor, which is attached to the exhaust. Has your engine management light been on? If yes chances are it is this sensor. Careful when buying a new one as there are many different variations. Check the number and colour of wires attached to sensor.
