It could be any number of problems. If brakes are ruled out check the following:
First, check to make sure your tires are not rubbing on the inside of the wheel well or on anything else.
Check inside the engine to make sure any belts are not rubbing on anything.
You may have something on your accessory belt that is starting to seize up causing the belt to rub.
If a calliper is "hanging", it could be causing the brake pads to press against the rotor and overheat the brakes. You may want to see if the calliper is dragging.
It could be a belt that needs replacing or any number of issues. Please see your mechanic.
