Protection of all poor and weary pilgrims travelling from Europe to the Promised Land occurred after the First Crusade in the 11th century. Hughes de Payen, a Frankish knight, petitioned Bernard of Clairveaux to ask the Pope to create a military order. Originally it consisted of nine knights who took a pledge to give up their families and their wealth in order to become warrior monks. Their code was written by Bernard who modelled it after the Cistercian order's. Patrols around Jerusalem and the rest of Palestine were made by two knights at a time. Originally the name of the order was The Poor Fellow-Soldiers of Christ and of the Temple of Solomon.
The Knights Templar, officially known as the Poor Fellow-Soldiers of Christ and of the Temple of Solomon, was founded around 1119 in Jerusalem. They were established by a group of French knights, primarily led by Hugh de Payens, to protect Christian pilgrims traveling to the Holy Land after the First Crusade. The order quickly grew in power and influence, becoming a key military and financial institution during the Crusades.
The Poor Fellow-Soldiers of Christ and of the Temple of Solomon (Latin: Pauperes commilitones Christi Templique Solomonici), commonly known as the Knights Templar or the Order of the Temple (French: Ordre du Temple or Templiers), were among the most famous of the Western Christian military orders.[3] The organization existed for approximately two centuries in the Middle Ages. It was founded in the aftermath of the First Crusade of 1096, to ensure the safety of the many Europeans who made the pilgrimage to Jerusalem after its conquest.
