on an a manual transmission, just grip the shift lever.
I talked to a rep from GM and he said that the whole shift arm has to be removed down below the boot. I had the same problem in my S-10.
there is a lock nut on the bottom of the shifter. just loosen the nut and should be able unscrew shifter.
