The top cover is held down by two spring clips, approx 4" in from each side. There is also an alignment pin with a washer on it just outside each spring clip... (Looking from the front, into the crack between the top lid and the front cover, these alignment pins fooled me into thinking that the top lid was screwed down to the front cover.... that was wrong!).
To open the top cover:
Insert a flat pry-bar or large flat-blade screwdriver near the clips and pry up on the top cover... be careful not to chip the paint. The spring clips will "let go"... it takes a fair amount of pressure to get them to release.
Once the lid is loose, you lift it like a car hood... it is "hinged" at the rear.
When the lid is lifted, you will then see the tops of two 5/16" hex-head sheet-metal screws, one at each corner, which hold the front panel onto the rest of the washer. To get access to the motor and the lower portion of the washer, just remove these two sheet metal screws and lift up on the the front panel to remove it.

Pull the timer from the unit and check to see if any of the "fingers" are stuck, sticking, or burnt. If so, change it. The timer is the "Brains" of the washer... it tells it when to start, cycle, & stop. Sounds to me like this is more than likely your problem. The washer allowed water to be drawn in and then went to "L".

I believe if you open the drivers side door and open the fuse panel access door located on the dash you will see that there is usually a fuse in there for the washer pump. If the fuse is OK, the problem might be the pump, usually located in the bottom of the resevoir. They are notorious for dying. Replacements can be found at your local parts store.
