depends on the car. GM distributors require removal of the distributor from the engine. Then removal of the drive gear at the bottom of the distributor by driving out the pin.
Remove the shaft through the top of the distributor
Unplug and unscrew the pick up, install new.
Reassemble, preferably with new retaining pin.
Re time engine ignition.
Remove Distributor,remove drive gear,remove shaft,remove pickup coil.
To replace the pickup coil in a GM vehicle, first disconnect the battery and remove the distributor cap for access. Next, carefully remove the retaining screws or clips holding the pickup coil in place, disconnect the wiring harness, and take out the old coil. Install the new pickup coil by reversing the removal process, ensuring it's properly aligned, and reconnect the wiring. Finally, reassemble the distributor cap, reconnect the battery, and test the ignition system.
remove the distributor cap remove the screws that attach the pick coil to the base of the distributor and replace in reverse order

Distributor pickup coil resistance 140-180 ohms.
remove the distributer, remove the roll pin holding the drive gear onto the distributer shaft, remove the distributer drive gear, remove the shaft from the distributer to gain access to and remove the stator(pick-up coil). Replace the stator, and reassemble everything.
The pickup coil in the distributor? !976 should be an HEI distributor. Take the cap off, unplug the wires going to the distributor, remove the rotor and the pickup coil is under the rotor and held in place with two screws.
