Hood release cable has connector nuts on both ends of the cable. Loosen the connector nuts. Remove the cable retainers. The cable will come off and can be replaced with a new hood release cable.
On my 97 mountaineer you cannot open the hood with the release inside the truck. Standing in front of the truck on the drivers side behind the grill the cable is located to pop the latch. Carefully pull out the bottom right side of the grill and you have to have a skinny arm reach in and pull downward on the cable itself this will pop the hood...

The hood release cable snakes into the cabin of the car through the firewall. To replace the cable remove the old wire. Zip tie the new cable to the old one and pull it out. This will easily snake the new cable into place. Install the new cable on the release and lever.

OneUnder the hood.... Remove the deflector pins, and remove the deflector. Remove the hood latch (16700). Remove the bolts. Remove the retaining screw, and disconnect the cable. Disconnect the two push-in clips holding cable in engine compartment. Inside....... Remove the cowl side trim panel above the brake handle. Remove the screws, and remove the hood latch control handle and cable.InstallationFollow the removal procedure in reverse order.

The fiero front hood release cable has an extra cable tucked inside the release lever housing. If they're both broke then you'll have to use a crowbar and lightly pry up on the hood but be extremely carefull not to break the fiberglass hood. Take a long flat tipped screw driver and remove the foam padding around the latch then take a 10mm stubby wrench and remove the 2 bolts holding the latch to the car then just raise the hood and trip the latch. Remove the old cable and install a new one.
