The exact cost for tolls from the Washington area to Hartford, Connecticut will depend on routing and type of vehicle. The toll over the Susquehanna River is unavoidable unless you seek to take a long and slower detour to the Connawingo Dam. Some segments such as the New Jersey Turnpike can be bypassed by taking I-95 through Pennsylvania and using Rt1 to cross the Hudson bridges or tunnels saving on tolls. Or, one can cross into New Jersey via the Delaware Memorial Bridge (free northbound) and then take I-295 toll free to Rt1 at Princeton and keep proceeding north to the Hudson crossings. The Hudson crossings will require tolls. The New York Throughway will also require a small toll for that I-95 segment. Thereafter there are no tolls.
