Remove all spark plugs. Turn the engine by hand until the #1 plug (front of engine driver's side) is at top dead center on the compression stroke. The rotor will now be pointing to the #1 plug location on the cap.

#1 will be the first hole past the cap's mounting screw on the left side of the distributor, going clockwise.
You can find out in the repair manual for you vehicle.
under the rotor on the inside of the distributor cap
get the compression stroke up on the number 1 spark plug and look at the rotor inside the distributor cap to see if it points to the number 1 wire on the cap
Align the rotor with the number one position on the distributor cap, then with the engine at TDC insert the distributor. There may be a mark on the outside of the distributor to help.
There is a notch in the distributor housing. It can only go one way.

It is on the back of the intake manifold just in front of the distributor. If it is a HEI vehicle it will be in the center of the distributor cap. (distributor cap will look larger than normal)
