automatic transmission 5 degrees BTDC @650 rpm in drive. Manual transmission 5 degrees BTDC @ 700 rpm in neutral
what motor do you have in it
the timing shoujld be 8 degrees BTDC. If your engine has a vacume advance hose running to the distributor than you will have to remove it from the distributor and seal it off before setting the timing.
Remove the vacuum hose at the distributor and plug it temporarily. Attach timing light and turn distributor as needed to set to factory specs or 8 degrees BTDC. Reattach vacuum line.
To set the timing on a 1972 460 cubic inch engine, first ensure the engine is at top dead center (TDC) on the compression stroke for cylinder number one. Next, locate the timing mark on the harmonic balancer and align it with the specified timing degree on the timing tab, typically around 6-12 degrees BTDC for this engine. Finally, loosen the distributor hold-down bolt, rotate the distributor to achieve the desired timing, and retighten the bolt. Always double-check the timing with a timing light after adjustments.
The order in the distributor will be 18436572 in a counter clockwise rotation. see link
How do u set the timing on a 1972 buick skylark
The engine will not fire. Remove the distributor cap and turn the engine over. If the rotor does not turn that is a good sign the chain has broken.
Use a timing light
No, the last year that GM used points in their distributor was in 1972.
