Cleaning the throttle body is especially important on Toyota vehicles. The thottle plate and idle air control valve are constantly getting layered with carbon build-up that travels into the air intake from the breather hose. If the idle air contoller gets clogged with this carbon, your engine idle low and rough, and will eventually start to stall out unless you keep the throttle applied. If you clean it regularly, you shouldn't have any problems. But, if you neglect to clean it, the build-up can harden and become uncleanable, which means you will have to replace the throttle body.
Later-model Toyota vehicles have very specialized (and very expensive) throttle body assemblies. The throttles are electronically controlled by a motor, and contain some important sensors, which can also go bad if the inside is not kept clean, which will lead to reduced MPG and check engine lights.
Another important item when it comes to keeping the throttle and intake system clean is the PCV valve. Replace this valve regularly, it's very cheap and has a very important job to do. If it starts to clog or stick, one of the problems it creates is more carbon, and even oil, coming out through the breather, and into your throttle. Don't bother having your PCV valve "checked," because if you wait until it goes bad before you replace it, it will have already started doing damage. I recommend replacing the PCV valve every 30,000 miles.
A bad PCV valve can also cause oil leaks and sludge build-up very quickly. Believe me, I make a lot of money off of Toyota owners who neglect to change their PCV valve.
To make the car move
You might own a Daimler-Chrysler product. Consider cleaning (the inside of) the throttle body.
The throttle manages the flow of fluid or gasses by constriction or obstruction. By constricting the flow it determines the engine's power outlet. The throttle body is part of the air intake system.
by cleaning it
Your throttle plate may be sticking, a good cleaning may solve the problem. It could also be the throttle position sensor, or maf sensor.
Lubricate Change cable Replace throttle body before replacing throttle try cleaning it out real good as a bad enough carbon build up can cause it to stick. It would help to know what kind of car. If the car has fuel injection, you probably need to clean the throttle plate. This is done by removing the throttle body and spraing the inside of the the throttle with throttle plate cleaner. Buy a bottle and read the directions on the can. This will also help improve your performance and gas mileage.
its probably the "kickdown" cable or arm, to shift gears according to how much pressure you have on the acelerator

Butterfly in the throttle body needs cleaning.
It could be the throttle body that needs to be cleaned ( easy lookup for throttle body cleaning in google ). Or maybe car needs timing, have a look at your distributor and spark plugs / see if all cylinders have good compression as last option.
So this would cause the car to only run if manually pressing throttle?? Have a 1987 Dodge Aries station wagon
Throttle bodys will make your car use more gas if it is starting to get carbon build up on it. This can be fixed by cleaning it out you do not need to replace the throttle body. Just take off the intake tube from it and look inside and turn the throttle so it will go horizontal in the chamber and look to see if it is black and dirty. If it is then go to any car parts store and buy a bottle of air intake cleaner and just spray it in the throttle body while the car is running and give it some gas so you can clean off the back side of the plate.
