The oil light will always come on for just a second after a car is started. If the oil light stays on, the oil could be low or need to be changed.
The oil light will usually come on for a few seconds when you first start the automobile. If the oil light stays on, it probably means you need to add oil to the engine.
an oil light is designed to come on when there is NO oil pressure or LITTLE oil pressure. that said, when your oil light is on before you start your engine there is NO oil pressure to turn it off until you start the engine.
I have a 2000 Pontiac Grand Am. I recently had my oil changed and noticed the change oil light stayed on. To get it off I had to turn the key to the on / run position, but I did not start it. Then I had to push the gas pedal to the floor three times within 5 seconds. The change oil light went off after a few seconds. I turned the car off. I then restarted the car and the change oil light did not stay on, it went off with all the rest of the lights that come on when you first start your car.
Less than 10 seconds at start up. Should not ever come on while driving.
Turn the key to the on position, depress the accelerator pedal to the floor within 3 seconds. Wait and the light will flash and then go out. Turn the key off and then start the car. The light will come on monentarily and then go out.
As long as the oil pressure light does not come on it will do no damage. If the light comes on, even for a few seconds, stop immediately.
this is for safety so engine does not get ruined, check oil level!!
Light is supposed to come on as soon as the ignition key is turned on. It should not take 20 seconds for the oil pressure to reach enough pressure to turn the light off. Change brands of oil filers you are using and make sure you are using the correct weight oil for this engine. Try a Purolator. If that doesn't help, check the oil pressure sending unit. It that checks out OK, have the oil pressure checked to see if there is a problem with the oil pump.
It takes a while before the system registers that there is good oil in your car/truck.
Turn ignition on but do not start engine, depress accelerator to the floor three times within 5 seconds, oil change light should flash 5 times, oil change light is reset if you did this correctly.
turn ignition switch to run do not start press gas pedal to floor three times within five seconds change oil light will flash if you did it rght turn off then start engine then you are done
