Could a diesel be bolted up to it? Certainly. or an adapter plate could be made for it. But it really depends on whichT56 and which diesel engine you had in mind. The torque rating of the T56 ranges from 300 ft/lbs (1386-000-003, used in the 1992 Dodge Viper) to 550 ft./lbs (1386-000-005, TUET-1806, and TUET-2062). In retrospect, the 5.9 liter Cummins 6BT was rated at 400 ft./lbs (within the range of some T56s), the 5.9 ISB is rated from 420 ft./lbs. to 505 ft./lbs. The 5.9 ISB with the common rail system is rated from 555 to 600 ft./lbs. The 6.7 Cummins ISB has torque ratings from 610 to 800 ft/lbs. Suffice to say that the 5.9 common rail and 6.7 would completely toast a T56.
You can check the owners manual for the 97 Dodge Dakota to determine if a T56 transmission will work with the car that has a 318 engine. Also, you can take the care to a certified mechanic as well to verify.
NO. The 95 transmission is a electronic / computer controlled transmission. The 1984 does not HAVE the electronics to make the 95 transmission work.

Mobil 1 Synthetic ATF is supposed to be really good.
its either a manual 6 speed (T56) or the 4L60E auto 4 speed
A 2003 Dodge diesel manual transmission will work in 1990 Dodge diesel manual and bolt to the 1990's transfer case with little fabrication.
No the wiring isn't the same
either a 4l60e which is a 4 speed automatic, or a t56 6 speed which is a manual
It is a completely different transmission than what was used with the diesel before.
