Can be esp. on an older vechile like yours. You could use a straight weight oil, say SAE 30w instead of 5w-30. Watch your oil level close, and depending on weather conditions (cold weather) startup can be a problem w/heavier weight oil. Also check your PCV valve, remove it , if it rattles it's good, if not replace it. Not only does it help with emmissions (PCV = positive crankcase ventilation) if it's clogged your adding to the buildup of pressure which helps push the oil past vavle seals, piston rings, and adds sludge to your engine oil. Doesnt cost much, and may help the (smokey startup) issue. Hope this helps....

If it has a real problem the computer will usually display a code to indicate what's wrong. Suggest you start there.
