In a 2009 Pontiac Vibe : The 1.8 liter and the 2.4 liter four cylinder engines have a timing CHAIN Helpfull
The 1.8 liter four cylinder in a 2003 Pontiac Vibe has a timing CHAIN
It must be a timing CHAIN , the Gates website doesn't list a timing belt for it
The timing chain is designed to last the lifetime of the engine unlike the timing belt.
The Pontiac Vibes (all models to date) do not use a timing belt, but are equipped with a long lasting timing chain.
I've been informed it has a timing chain, not belt, and therefore does not need to be replaced.
By timing strap, I'm assuming that you mean the timing belt. The Pontaic Vibe uses the 1.8 liter engine also used in the Toyota Matrix and Toyota Corolla. This engine has an internal timing chain and does not require replacement. Keep the oil changed and drive that baby worry free regarding the timing chain.
If and when it breaks...seriously. There is no need to service or replace it unless there is reason to. All you need to do is keep up on the oil changes and oil level.
Has timing chain slap, thats why I asked the question above! Thanks
Yes, the 1.8-liter engine found in the Pontiac Vibe is considered an interference engine. This means that if the timing belt or chain fails, the pistons can collide with the valves, potentially causing significant engine damage. It's important to maintain the timing components to prevent such failures. Regular inspections and timely replacements are crucial for engine longevity.
is there a video on how to change the starter for a 2003 vibe
There is a big difference between a TIMING BELT OR CHAIN and a MULTIFUNCTION SERPENTINE ACCESSORY DRIVE BELT. The Timing Belt or Timing Chain is inside the engine and cannot be seen. Some cars have a rubber belt (many Japanese vehicles) that has a limited life, such as around 60,000 to 80,000 miles. It takes 2 -3 hours or more to change it because many parts have to be removed, sometimes the radiator. If it breaks, in some cars, one of the pistons will hit one of the valves and bend it, and this type of engine is called a "valve bender". Fixing a bend valve is very expensive. Many cars have a steel timing chain (many USA vehicles such as Chevy, Pontiac, and others). The steel chain is good for the life of the engine. They usually don't break, maybe 1 in 500,000 vehicles. God bless America and vehicles that are MADE IN USA.
