My son's 1999 Salvaged/total Saturn SL1 was rebuilt using many engine and body parts from 1995-1999 Saturn SL1 and SL2 cars, I believe it will work fine. I do not recommend before 1995 or 2000 or later models. I do not recommend SL2 either. I am not the expert but most of my son's engine is not 1999 SL1. Good luck!
On a 1997 Saturn SL1, the crankshaft position sensor is located on the engine block, near the oil pan and behind the starter motor. It is positioned towards the rear of the engine, where it can detect the position of the crankshaft. You may need to remove the starter for better access to the sensor during replacement or inspection.
The relay is attached to the starter and is an integral part.
The starter for a 1998 Saturn SL1 is located on the driver's side of the engine, near the transmission. To access it, you can reach it from above the engine compartment, but it may be easier to get to it from underneath the vehicle. If accessing from below, you'll need to raise the vehicle and remove the splash shield if present, allowing you to reach the starter more easily.
