because it automatically detects that you are stupid and prevents charging. possibly an alternator instead of altinater would also help.
Not Nice; Rocky_B - See my entry here for more things you might want to check: http://wiki.answers.com/Q/What_could_be_wrong_if_the_battery_light_stays_on_and_the_battery_still_runs_down_on_a_1996_windstar_after_installing_a_new_battery_and_alternator
Alternator is not charging. Have it tested and/or replaced.

I have a 2000 Malibu and I am having the same problem. There is an electrical problem. I have yet to figure out how to solve it, but turning on the AC blows the fuse. Ive had the instrument cluster replaced, so dont go and do that, because your car will still do the same thing. Your BCM (Body Control Module) may need to be replaced, or it is just a bad wiring. If you have replaced your battery, that may be a part of the problem. I know this information is not much, but hopefully it will help. I have a 2000 Malibu and I am having the same problem. check the battery, its probably dead
head gasket leak or thermostate needs to be replaced
The head gasket on a 1999 Chevy Malibu is replaced by removing the coolant, intake manifold, and retaining bolts. The cylinder head can then be removed, the gasket replaced, and everything reassembled.
You don't have to unplug the horn to replace the battery.
You might have a bad battery, a poor connection between the battery and alternator, or a bad ground from the battery.
take negative off batt. and wait 30 secs. it will restart comp.
Rods and Rocker arms were the problem with my Malibu after changing lifters
