well sometimes, when you buy a plant from a store, it tells you what type of plant it is.
but , if it grows from your garden, then I'm sure you can just look up different types of plants on the web.
or just getta book & search it in the book .
There are lots of ways to distinguish between trees! All of them require some former knowledge or a guidebook to reference but they have many distinguishing features.
Leaves are one of the easiest ways to tell trees apart. Leaves come in nearly infinite numbers of shapes and patterns, so the actual shape of it is one way (think of how the leaf on the Canadian flag is immediately recognizable as maple). Color is another. People tend to think of leaves as green but on some trees they are more yellow, may have stripes, or could even be purple.
Flowers are another way. Most people have seen pictures of lovely cherry blossoms that are so distinguishable and other trees have flowers too.
Fruit or nuts can be a good way to tell the difference. Oak trees have acorn, maple trees have those little "helicopters," apple trees have apples, and so on.
The bark is a slightly harder way but it can be used as well. Is it smooth or rough? Does it have patterns in it? Is it light or dark brown, white, greenish? These are all ways to tell one tree from another.
Woods of trees are all different. They are different colors (some are reddish, some are brown, some are nearly white), different hardnesses (some you could scratch with your fingernail but others may need a real nail), and may have different scents (a noteable example is the cedar tree, whose wood is so fragrant people use it in their closets).
Climate should also be considered: you probably won't be finding a palm tree in Alaska or a hemlock in Jamaica.
I hope this helps! There are lots of good guidebooks out there that are as simple or inclusive as you want them to be!
The best and most accurate way to discover what type of plant is currently growing in your yard would be to call a lawn specialist. If that individual does not know what type of plant is present you may want to take a picture of the plant and contact someone who specializes in botany.
Ask a local landscape nursery or arborist.
Conifers and flowering plants both produce seeds, but they are classified as completely different types of plants. While conifers are always trees (although some may appear to be shrubs), flowering plants can be trees, succulents and even grasses. However, there are several specific differences between the two that scientists use to tell them apart if there is ever any doubt.

The koala has an acutely sensitive nose, which enables it to detect subtle scent differences between different species of gum trees.
All acorns are the seed of oak trees (Quercus) there are many varieties and each variety has an individual identity so to tell them apart you would need to compare them together.
Using soy milk in your baking will not have a very noticeable effect on the taste. Only the most discernable eater will be able to tell the differnce, and it should be minor.
