How do parents pass down genes?

Very simply put, the genes are present in chromosomes found in the nucleus of all the parents cells. These chromosomes come in pairs and they are copied each time a cell divides.

However, in the ovaries or testes of the parents the process of cell devision is modified so that the egg or sperm cells end up with just one half of each pair of chromosomes from the parent.

When the egg and sperm meet and the egg is fertilized, the offspring cells formed by the union once again have paired chromosomes, half from the mother and half from the father.

People are made up of cells. There are two types of cells in every person's body: the somatic cells, which are almost all of the cells - skin, muscle, fat, brain, everything except the sex cells. In the females, this is the eggs, and the males it is the sperm. Cells in your body contain chromosomes - which are made up by genes, which are made up by DNA. The somatic cells have 46 chromosomes in each cell, but the sex cells have only 23. This is because when a child is created, the sex cells of the female and male (egg and sperm) combine, to make a complete set of chromosomes (46). You can see that the child is really a combination of the chromosomes from the mother and father, because the genes in all cells of an individual are the same, and they decide all of one person's characteristics. They are passed in to the child because the DNA of the child is a mixture of the chromosomes of the parents.

by a process called meiosis which produces haploid gametes and these haploid gametes fertilize to produce diploid zygote and thus a diploid living organsim. during meiosis the chromosome number is reduced to half in formation of gametes. there is involvement of crossing over and random distribution which brings about variation in the new individual
