∙ 10y agoThe cells of a plant change shape depending on the availability of water. The cells and plant take measures to reduce the amount of water loss through their stomata and conserve the water they currently have.

∙ 10y agoIn the process of osmosis, water diffuses from where it is in higher concentration to where it is in lower concentration. So if plant cells are placed in an environment with lower water concentration than inside of the cell, the water will move out of the cell into the low water environment. This loss of water will cause the cell cytoplasm to shrink away from the cell wall in a process called plasmolysis.

The inside of cells have a higher concentration of Potassium. But there's a higher concentration of Sodium outside the cell.
Red blood cells do contain some salts and other ions inside the cell. This means that if it is placed in water (assuming that it is deionized and has no solvent in it) the cell will be hypotonic because the concentration inside the cell will be higher than it is outside the cell.
When a cell is placed in higher concentration of water then endosmosis of water in the cell takes place because in the cell water concentration is low and osmotic(solute) pressure is high so water moves from its higher concentration towards its lower concentration which means it moves inside the cell and the cell becomes turgid.
Animal cell are hypertonic to the water i.e. they have more solute concentration inside the cell when placed in pure water. Now by the law solvent(water here) move from low concentration of solute to high concentration of solute so water move inside the animal cell which make cell to swell up and when the swelling pressure increase then wall pressure the cell get burst
Osmosis is the movement of water by diffusion across a semi-permiable membrane. The student placed the cheek cells in water and when cells are placed in an environment of a high concentration of a particular substance, the cell practices osmosis where the water moves from a high concentration (the water on the slide), to a low concentration (the cheek cells) until they reach equilibrium. In this case, the process of osmosis did not cease as the cells were immersed in such a high concentration of water and it continued until the cell was so full that it burst. Unlike plant cells, cheek cells do not have a cell wall and their membrane is semi permeable, thus allowing water to travel through. The cell reacts to this water in almost a form of 'shock' and it tries to make the inner contents of itself, equal to its surroundings.

If a jellyfish was placed in a freshwater lake, the jellyfish would be placed in a hypotonic environment. In other words, due to the fact that the jellyfish was placed in a hypotonic environment, or an area of low solute concentration compared to the jelly fish, its cells would be flooded with the fresh water and its cells would burst, causing the death of the jellyfish.

A hypertoinic environment to human cells means there is more water and less solute inside the cell. Thus water will move out of the cell because the of the concentration gradient. The cell will shrivel and die.

Cells would shrink if they were placed in a salty environment. Salt has a lower phi, or water pressure, than the interior of the cell, and the water in the cell would naturally flow out of it through osmosis. The cell would become hyper-osmotic in respect to the environment around it.
