Seeds of most fruit are indigestible and are eaten by animals and birds who deposit those seeds in their fecal matter. Since these creatures do not stay in the same place, the seeds are dispersed over a large area usually similar to that of where the mother plant thrived. They also have the benefit of being fertilized.

The current line of thought is that animals eat the fruit and seeds, wander away, and poop the seeds out (with fertilizer!) spreading the seeds over a great distance
