The mitochrondria main function is to produce ATP. ATP is the currency of cells, with out this currency cell function slows down, then eventually can cease. Therefore, any disorder that leads to substantial reduction in ATP production cause lethal problem in the CNS, which needs a continuous supply of ATP. Cyanide poison works this way. it inhibit the electron transport system in the mitichondria, thus resulting death.

What pattern of inheritance would lead a geneticist to suspect that an inherited disorder of cell metabolism is due to a defective mitochondrial gene?

The disorder would always be inherited from the mother because the mother's mitochondrial gene is the only one that survives when the zygote is formed. The gamete from the mother contains all the information. The head of the father's sperm is the only part that survives during fertilization. The tail of the sperm containing the male's mitochondria (an their genes) is lost when the zygote begins development. Thus it is only from the mother that the disorder can be inherited.

How does the inheritance of mitochondrial DNA different found in the nucleus of cells?

Mitochondrial DNA is only inherited from the mother, while nuclear DNA is inherited from both parents. Mitochondrial DNA is circular and does not undergo recombination, whereas nuclear DNA is linear and can recombine during meiosis. Mitochondrial DNA codes for a small number of genes related to energy production, while nuclear DNA contains genes that determine various traits and characteristics.

Which cell populations would be most affected by mitochondrial cytopathies?

Cells with high energy demands such as muscle cells, nerve cells, and cells in the heart would be most affected by mitochondrial cytopathies, as they rely heavily on mitochondrial function to generate energy in the form of ATP. Dysfunction in mitochondria would lead to impaired energy production, causing symptoms related to these tissues.

Is mitochondrial DNA linear or circular in structure?

Mitochondrial DNA is circular in structure.

Is the mitochondrial membrane permeable to protons?
