In very sunny climates like Africa the skin is at great risk of danage from UV light which can cause melonomas. The reason skin darkens in temporary sun (sun tan) is that extra melanin is produced in the top most layers of the skin to pretect the deeper layers by blocking the sun light. Human beings started out all having very dark skin as they came from Africa where the sun is very bright. As they moved away from Africa to duller areas (Europe) they evolved not to produce this much melanin as it was unnecessary and used a lot of energy and raw materials to produce. some peopel still have very dark skin as they still live in very sunny parts of the world where it is still needed.

The variations in human skin color is controled by the amount of melanin within the epidermis or outer layer of skin. Albinos, or persons with little or no melanin in their skin, have very pale, pinkish skin, regardless of the skin color of their parents.

Melanin. A pigment produced to reduce damage from certain wavelengths of light such as UV. In places where the sun is very bright and hot, there tends to be high levels of UV and therefore a higher risk of damage. People from these regions have evolved to have darker pigmentation to counteract the damaging properties of light, whereas such pigmentation has been lost in areas where UV is not particularly intense. Some absorption of these wavelengths is important however, which is why the loss of pigmentation where the light is less intense has been beneficial, for example, radiation from the sun is needed to produce vitamin D and too much melanin can prevent you getting the amount of sun needed to produce the vitamin. Too little melanin can lead to UV damage such as sunburn or even skin cancer.

The amount of melanin pigment present in the epidermis. More melanin typically results in a darker skin tone while less melanin results in a lighter skin tone.

Melanin is also responsible for the colour of a person's eyes and hair.

Variation in human skin color is an example of what?

Skin color is a polygenic trait. A polygenic trait is one that is controlled by multiple genes. Each gene for skin color deposits no pigment, some pigment, or lots of pigment. The additive effect of the deposited pigment from each gene for skin color results in a whole spectrum (continuum) of color. Also, skin color is affected by the environment, which further increases the variation in human skin color.

Can not be done. Skin color is the result of several things. DNA determines eye, hair, and skin color as well as other things. Melanin pigment produces skin color and freckles. The less melanin the whiter the skin. You can not change it. Be proud of who you are.
