What happens to the bladder and urethra during an erection?

Nothing. The bladder is essentially a bag which stores urine, it is fed by the two kidneys and it drains out along the urethra, which passes through the prostate gland, then along the length of the penis and out through the small opening in its tip. During and ejaculation sperm travels from the testes along a tube called the vas deferens until it reaches the prostate gland, here the vas deferens connects with the urethra. Put simply the prostate gland acts rather like the points system on a railway track. When the penis is soft the prostate allows liquid from the bladder to pass along the urethra and out of the penis, when the penis is erect the prostate effectively stops the flow of urine and instead allows the flow of semen into the urethra and along the penis. This mechanism prevents the two fluids from mixing, this is necessary as urine is quite effective as a spermicide.

How does prostate enlargement interfere with urination?

As the prostate gland becomes enlarged, it presses against the bladder and constricts the urethra, which is the tube that runs from the bladder through the prostate and out through the penis to remove urine from the body. As the bladder and urethra are constricted, it interferes with the easy flow of urine from the body. Not only does protate enlargement constrict the urethra, it often leads to infection of the prostate and in some serious cases operation is necessary.

The male urethra is divided into threesegments. The prostatic urethra passes through the prostate gland, the urogenital diaphragm and the bulb of the urethra. The membranous urethra has the shortest length and is found between the prostatic urethra and the spongy urethra. It extends downward between the apex of the prostate and the bulb of the urethra. The spongy urethra is the longest part of the male urethra and it passes through the length of the penis, more specifically through the corpus spongiosum penis (a mass of spongy tissue surrounding the male urethra within the penis), and the glans.

How might enlargement of the prostrate gland interfere with urination or the reproductive?

The Prostate (not ProstRate no second R) is rather like a doughnut and the base of the penis passes through the center on its way out of the body. The urethra passes through the penis so as the Prostate swells it constricts around the penis, cutting off or restricting the flow of urine. If the swelling is great enough it may also slightly put pressure on the bladder, limiting its ability to hold urine.

What cavity is the prostate in?

The prostate lies adjacent to the bladder in the lower abdomen. The urethra passes from the bladder through the prostate gland and then to the penis. Its function is to produce semen. If the prostate is removed because of cancer (prostatectomy) the urethra is stitched to the bladder. A catheter provides the means of emptying the bladder until the stitches heal.
