Thalidomide was prescribed for morning sickness in pregnancy before the devastating effects were known. Thalidomide affects angiogenesis which is the process in which new blood vessels form. By preventing the formation of these new vessels to take place, directly resulting in babies being born with no limbs.
There are three theories how this drug works on developing fetuses:
1. The drug prevents blood vessel development. Since the limbs need a good supply, they do not fully form.
2. It inactivates a protein called cereblon. This protein is important in limb development.
3. Both
since it "lacks" a Y chromosome, the production of testosterone is low and the baby develops female.
some symptoms you can have with pku is babies can have brain damage which causes mental retardation another symptom is the baby can stunt its growth and your baby is most likely to stay small for life
Contributory causes are the causes identified after immediate cause. For example, If a baby suffering from loose motions, we can say that the cause of loose motions is an infection with a virus. So, the immediate cause of the disease is virus. It may be that the cause of infection with virus is unclean drinking water. Many babies must have had this unclean drinking water but only tis baby is suffering. Reason may be the baby is not healthy. It is also possible that baby has some genetic difference that makes it more likely to suffer from loose motions when exposed to a virus.Without the virus, the genetic difference or the poor nourishment alone would not lead to loose motions.Perhaps because the public service is not good where the baby's families live. So, the poverty become the third-level contributory cause of the disease.
The brain plays no part in lactation. The breast does it all on its own. When a baby sucks on the nipple, the breast produces a hormone called prolactin. Prolactin then tells the breast to start producing milk (lactogenesis) to feed the baby.
During pregnancy the hormone prolactin promotes the necessary development in the mammary glands for the production of milk although the high progesterone levels will suppress milk production. After birth the placenta is gone and with it the progesterone that it was producing. At this point the mammary glands are ready to supply milk to the newborn infant. The infant by suckling causes a reflex release of milk. It is the continued stimulation by the baby that keeps the milk supply constant.http://www.answers.com/library/Children's%20Health%20Encyclopedia-cid-45250
Thalidomide
The most common reason is achondroplasia (dwarfism). Half a century ago now, the drug thalidomide, given to pregnant women, caused shortened limbs. Other causes exist, as well.
