Chemical reactions need to keep moving in one direction or the other-- either giving off energy, or using it up. If chemical reactions were at equilibrium, no energy is being absorbed nor given off, therefore nothing would happen.

If something is said to be in equilbrium it means that is in its optimum environment and that it is functioning as efficently as possible. All the things that an organism needs are being met yet all the things that organism doesn't need are not being met. So a balance is produced meaning that the organism can thrive.

Ion product constant is essentially when something reaches equilibrium. Such as in the case of water. When water reaches its ion product constant it becomes both a base and an acid, reaching equilibrium.

It will gradually diffuse until it reaches equilibrium.
