Sod is growing plant material (usually grass) that is removed from one area of ground, often to be added to another area of ground such as a lawn. Since it contains both the stems, leaves, and roots of the plants, it provides a living ground cover more rapidly than it could be grown from seed.

In the frontier days of the Great Plains, where timber is relatively scarce, many early settlers built houses made of sod. This same material was used for dwellings by the Caddo Indians of eastern Texas.
