A mutation occurs in the DNA of the cell. Remember tDNA, RNA and all that. Well the mutation can get copied over and over again because the cell sees the mutation as "normal". This could lead to birth defects and rare ailments as seen more commonly in pediatric medicine. Hope this helps.
