Because introducing foreign animals is almost never is a good thing. It alters the delicate ecosystem and balance of the area.

For example, in the biggest tropical lake in the world (Lake Victoria in Uganda), they introduced a foreign fish into the water. And almost all of the small fish native to only that lake became prey to these fish. And they were big fish so a lot of fishermen started going to the lake. Less fish was less food for crocodiles and more people going to the lake meant that the odds of encountering a crocodile was higher. The result, not pleasant.

Nobody knew that was going to be the effect of introducing the fish into there, but it was. One thing about introducing foreign animals is that it's easy to do so but it's almost impossible to bring them back out....

When plasmids are used to transfer foreign DNA to other cells the plasmid is called?

When plasmids are used to transfer foreign DNA to other cells, the plasmid is called a vector. Vectors are commonly used in genetic engineering to introduce new genes into host cells for various applications, such as producing proteins of interest or studying gene function.

What is a cell or organism that contains foreign DNA inserted into its own genetic material called?

A cell or organism that contains foreign DNA inserted into its own genetic material is called a genetically modified organism (GMO). This process is typically done through genetic engineering techniques to introduce specific traits or characteristics into the organism.

What is the function of a plasmid in the cloning technique shown in the transparency?

A plasmid in cloning serves as a vector to carry the foreign DNA fragment and introduce it into a host cell for replication. It provides a replication origin, antibiotic resistance gene, and a cloning site for inserting the DNA of interest.

How does heat shock transformation work in genetic engineering processes?

Heat shock transformation is a method used in genetic engineering to introduce foreign DNA into bacterial cells. In this process, the bacterial cells are briefly exposed to a high temperature, which makes their cell membranes more permeable. This allows the foreign DNA to enter the cells more easily. After the heat shock, the cells are placed in a nutrient-rich medium to recover and express the foreign DNA, resulting in the production of genetically modified bacteria.

The ability to introduce new genes into an organism?

The ability to introduce new genes into an organism is achieved through genetic engineering techniques such as gene cloning, CRISPR-Cas9 editing, and gene transfer methods like viral vectors or electroporation. These techniques allow scientists to insert foreign DNA into an organism's genome, giving it new traits or functions. The ultimate goal is to improve characteristics such as crop yield, disease resistance, or the production of valuable compounds.
