The miochondria is said to be the "powerhouse" of the cell because this is where celluar respiration takes place. Cellular respiration, otherwise known as "CR" is the process of taking in glucose and oxygen, yeilding light, and then releasing water, carbon dioxide, and energy. The equation for cellular respiration is as follows;

C6H12O6+6O2--->6CO2+H2O+ energy
It produces energy (in the form of high energy bonds within ATP) from the breakdown of organic molecules.

Mitochondria are sometimes described as "cellular power plants," because they generate most of the cell's supply of ATP, used as a source of chemical energy. The number of mitochondria in a cell varies widely by organism and tissue type. Many cells possess only a single mitochondrion, while others can contain several million mitochondria. Although most of a cell's DNA is contained in the cell nucleus, mitochondria have their own independent genomes. According to the endosymbiotic theory, mitochondria are descended from free-living prokaryotes.

    What is the nickname for the powerhouse of the cell?

    The mitochondrion (pl. mitochondria), found in the cytoplasm of eukaryotic cells, is nicknamed the "powerhouse of the cell".The mitochondrion contains the enzymes and complexes of the electron transport chain. Passage of a proton along the electron transport chain catalyses the synthesis of ATP(adenosine triphosphate), which is the "energy currency" of the cell.Cells which are physiologically more active, such as muscle cells, contain more mitochondria, compared to metabolically inactive cells.

    What organelles are considered the powerhouse of the cell?

    Mitochondria are known as the powerhouse of the cell because they contain enzymes that are needed for stepwise oxidation of food stuffs (carbohydrate, fats and lipids) present in the cells to CO2 and water. Oxidation of food releases energy which is used to form high energy ATP (adenosine triphosphate) molecules. ATP is known as Energy Currency of the cell and it is used as cellular fuel. Energy stored in ATP is used to bring about energy requiring activities of the cell such as photosynthesis, protein synthesis and muscle contraction.

    Organelle that produces energy?

    Mitochondria produce a cell's energy. They are known as the power house of the cell

    What is the mitochondrion is the cell organelle responsible for?

    The mitochondrion (plural mitochondria) is the cell organelle responsible for energy production. Many refer to the mitochondrion as the cellular power plant due to it's role in the production of ATP

    Which organelle is known as powerhouse of the cell and why?

    The mitochondrion is referred to as the "powerhouse" of the cell. The mitochondrion is a membrane bound organalle that converts oxygen and nutrients into Adenosine triphosphate (ATP). The mitochondrian generates most of the cell's supply of ATP. ATP is the primary source of energy for the cell.
