You will have to remove the starter housing to determine if it is the starter mechanism or the engine. Normally the starter mechanism is not too difficult to repair. But if it is engine could be very bad news.
Pull starter apart. Clean commutater and the grooves in the commutater. Make sure the brushes are good and reassemble. Should work well.

try this.this is how it works on my 98 jgc. hope it helps Disconnect your battery, then remove the two nuts from the starter wire harness. Pull the wire and cable of the studs. Remove starter bolts and slide starter out of bellhosing.
There are pull in windings and hold in windings in a solenoid on a starter. The pull in pulls the starter gear into the ring gear on the engine then the hold in takes over and allows more power for the starter to turn the engine.

disconnect the battery then You have to pull the air breather off the top take out the radiator fan in the front of the car then you can take the two starter bolts out. Disconnect the starter wires and you can pull the starter out from the top.
jack up the truck and get uner it and pull out the the exst then pull the starter boltes pull the starter down and unhook the wires the put the new one in
Remove 2 or 3 starter bolts and pull out starter, but first disconnect battery.

Get some tool's and pull it out install new starter!
