disconnect the battery then You have to pull the air breather off the top take out the radiator fan in the front of the car then you can take the two starter bolts out. Disconnect the starter wires and you can pull the starter out from the top.

The thermostat on a 1997 Oldsmobile Achieva SL goes on the very bottom of the water pump. It is inside the top hose of the radiator on the end that attaches to the water pump.

The Achaiva from 92 to 97 replaced the Cutlas Calais. It was replaced in 99 by the Oldsmobile Alero

The 1997 Oldsmobile starter relay switch can be found in the fuse box. The starter relay switch will be at the top of the third column.
The gas tank itself displays the number 8 on the bottom of it, however my 97 Acheiva seems to be a bottomless well.
I am about to attempt this same procedure on my 97 also, according to the Haynes Manual, theres a screw on the parking brake handle that you have to remove, and one on the shifter also, after that its just a bunch of plastic fastners. once you remove the console and the floor panels, its supposedly just held in by 2 clips.
mine's a 98, but all the rear lighting is accessed through the trunk by pulling back the upholstery. mine's self explanatory from there, not sure about the 97 though
