Changing the gear oil in a 4 stroke outboard, is the same proceedure as with the 2 stroke. Remove the drain plug, at bottom of gearcase, remove vent plug at top of gearcase and let drain. Fill from bottom, (drain plug hole), until lube runs out of top, (vent plug hole). While blocking off drain plug hole, to keep oil from draining, replace vent plug. Make sure that plug gaskets are in place and in serviceable condition. Quickly, replace the drain plug.
The size of the engine is not mentioned, but most Mercury outboard models situate the drain plug on the lower half of the port side cowling.
